AntiCatholic Memes Refuted Moczar

Seven Lies About Catholic History: Infamous Myths about the Church’s Past and How to Answer Them, by Diane Moczar. 20101

A Refutation of the Canned Attacks on the Catholic Church. Dark Ages a Myth. Crusades. Inquisition

Most attacks on Catholicism come from atheists and disgruntled ex-Catholics. In addition, calumnies come from those who hate the moral authority of the Church.

The ignorance of those who attack the Catholic Church is, unfortunately, often matched by the ignorance of Catholics. [This probably owes to the mush and soppy liberalism that pass for Catholic instruction–ever since Vatican II.] This book, although brief and not deep, goes a long way in filling the gap. Contrary to some critics who evidently have not read this book, it does include detailed references to support its contentions, and to which the deeper reader can go to.

The reader learns a lot in this book, and I touch on a few matters. The Dark Ages were a rationalist-constructed myth. In actuality, significant invention took place in the Middle Ages. And, yes, Catholic education then was real education, and not merely indoctrination. The Crusades were a legitimate response to centuries of Islamic aggression against Christians. The massacre at Jerusalem was a response to Muslims mocking and profaning the Cross. The deaths from the Inquisition were quite small.

WHEN PROTECTING THE TRUTH WAS MORE IMPORTANT THAN ‘TOLERANCE”

Diane Moczar explains why the Church fought heresy, “Explain why ‘tolerance’, in the modern sense of ‘anything goes and it does not matter what one believes,’ did not exist in Christian times. On the contrary, people believed that it was of the greatest importance that everyone believe what was true and what would bring him eternal life. Just as it was a crime to kill the body of a person, a crime for which death was the only penalty, so it was even more a crime to kill the soul by destroying the virtues of faith, hope, and charity with false doctrine, because that destruction affected one’s eternal destiny.” (p. 170).

Good book!
