Nazism AntiChistian Billinger

Hitler Is No Fool (Classic Reprint), by Karl Billinger (Pseudonym), Paul W. Massing. 2018

Insights into Nazi Anti-Christianity. “Grave Injustice of Versailles” Exculpation Fails. Pre-WWII German Designs on Poland

My review is based on the original 1939 edition. Author Karl Billinger is identified as a young German now living in the United States. Owing to the breadth of the information presented in this book, most of which presents well-known Nazi themes, I focus on a few issues.

The author exhibits a leftist bias. For instance, he mentions Communism, but glosses over its designs on Europe, and its crimes.

Billinger touches on the gay Nazis. High-level SA officers Roehm and Heines were openly homosexual. Certain SA officers had been abusing boys in the Hitler Youth Organization. (p. 19). However, there is no evidence that Hitler was gay. (p. 20).

The author discusses Nazi anti-Semitism. He affirms the fact that Mussolini’s turn to anti-Semitism was a recent development. (p. 82).

INTERWAR GERMAN DESIGNS ON POLAND

This book was written before WWII, so was not colored by this event. Even so, the author realizes that Hitler had a LEBENSRAUM agenda, even though he does not use this term. The conquered Poles were to be replaced with German settlers, and not Germanized. (pp. 58-60).

All this had recent antecedents in WWII. The Brest-Litovsk Treaty, stayed by Germany’s WWI defeat, would have involved Russia ceding to Germany a territory that amounted to 1.5 times the size of Germany itself. (p. 108). However, Germany’s designs against the Slavic peoples were not cooled by her WWI defeat. Hitler’s ambitions including the seizing of part of the territory of the Soviet Union, and Hitler, already in the 1930’s, was greatly underrating the industrial capacities of the USSR. (pp. 174-175). [This, of course, became one of the major factors in the defeat of Nazi Germany after the eventual German invasion of the USSR.]

The remainder of my review consists of direct quotes:

THE “VERSAILLES WAS TERRIBLE” GERMAN EXCULPATION FAILS

What the workers wanted to express with the cry “Brest-Litovsk” was their indignation over the hypocrisy of the German Imperialists in representing the Versailles Treaty as a terrible injustice, after they themselves had fought for years for the annexation of territory and in the Peace of Brest-Litovsk has dictated the same cruel conditions to a defeated Russia. (p. 107. For details, see pp. 108-109).

NAZISM AN ANTI-CHRISTIAN MOVEMENT. OPPORTUNISTIC CONCESSIONS TO CHRISTIANITY

Hitler knows that countless dangers lurk on the road to a Place in the Sun—enemies all around, at home and beyond the German borders. There is, for example, the Christian Church, which, in spite of its notorious complacency in dealing with the strong of this world, constitutes for Hitler an eternal source of pernicious doctrines and is partly responsible for the pacifism which has sapped the strength from German hearts and made them incapable of fighting the bloody battles of the future. (p. 71).

With such a righteous man [Hitler], himself brought up a Catholic, who gave the Church its due and who would uproot godless Communism, the Vatican was eager to sign a concordat. That was in 1933, soon after Hitler became Chancellor. At that time his position was not secure. The agreement with the Pope strengthened him at home and abroad. It “coordinated” twenty million German Catholics and helped smooth over foreign criticism of torture and murder in the prisons and concentration camps. A few years later the Nazi press suddenly published sensational reports of moral crimes of degenerates in priestly garb [Sound familiar?], of sexual perversion among Catholic monks, of the treacherous smuggling of money out of Germany by Catholic nuns. In campaigns which lasted weeks the immorality and the high treason of Catholic priests were paraded by the people in monster public trials. A new KULTUR KAMPF is now on, fought with the weapons of National Socialist lies and unscrupulousness. More than eight thousand Catholic monks and lay brothers, according to official reports, were brought to trial. Step by step the Catholic Church is now being robbed of the rights Hitler had guaranteed it in the Concordat. Catholic youth organizations have been dissolved; Catholic parents have been so intimidated that they are taking their children out of parochial schools. The leader of the “Catholic Action,” Ministerial Director Klausener, along with several of his collaborations, was shot by the SS in the blood purge of 1934. The famous Encyclical of Pius XI did not deter the Nazis for one moment. The Protestant Church is hardly better off. Hundreds of ministers who refuse to use their pulpits for Nazi propaganda have been paying for their daring in prisons and concentration camps…When today a German attends services at the Evangelical Confessional Church or attends Catholic mass, it is no longer, as in former days, merely a matter of worship, but also a political act. Whether he wants to or not, he indicates thereby that his conception of the nature of religion and of the function of the Church is not that of the Nazis, and that he rejects the National Socialist “People’s Church,” whose chief theorist [is] Hitler’s close friend Alfred Rosenberg… (pp. 135-137).
